THE CHRONICLES OF GRACE
This is a special area where those who hold to the Doctrines of Grace which can be defined as followed: We believe that there is no one who seeks after God (Rom. 3:11), that man is born in sin and hence is by nature a child of wrath and that a man that is born in sin cannot change (Jer. 13:23), he is dead in his sin (Eph. 2:1-2), that the things of God are foolishness to him and he can’t even understand them (1 Cor. 2:14). Man is born in the flesh and hence does not subject himself to the laws of God because he isn’t even able to do so and he cannot please God (Rom. 8:5-8). We ask: Is believing in Jesus Christ for salvation something that is pleasing to God? We would say “yes” yet the scripture tells us man cannot do this, it is an incapacity. Something has to happen to this man, he needs a new nature, he needs to be regenerated or born again (John 3:3-5) before he can do anything pleasing to God. God needs to give this spiritually lifeless man some faith (Phil. 1:9) and it comes as a gift to him (Eph. 2:8-9) The question is: does everyone get this gift? The answer is no, since the scripture is clear that it was only “as many had been appointed to eternal life that believed (Acts 13:48) and God has specifically chosen some for salvation (2 Thes. 2:13). Yahweh has chosen some in Christ before the foundation of the world (Eph. 1:4). The term “elect” means “chosen” and we believe that God elects people, people don’t elect God. God foreknows a people (note in passing it doesn’t say “foresees what people do”) which He predestines, which He calls, which He justifies and which He glorifies (Rom. 8:30). God is the
subject and we are the object. We believe the term “predestination” to mean Pre = beforehand and destination = destiny. We are convinced that God has beforehand decreed the destiny of those elect based on His will and not man’s will (John 1:13). We affirm that men will believe because they are His sheep and not the other way around (John 10:26). We assert that man has a will however it is a “compatibalistic” will and not a libertarian free-will where man’s intentions are evil and God’s are good. God will punish the intentions of man’s heart even though He has decreed these specific events (Genesis 50, Isaiah 10, Acts 4:27-28)
